Who shall guard the guardians?

There’s an interesting debate on in the Indian blogistan about regulation and free markets. I may add my 2 paise later. For now, here’s a question: who regulates the regulators?

Cop show flouts 10 pm noise ban

The Mumbai police last night flouted a law they are otherwise adept at enforcing — the 10 pm deadline for loudspeakers. The 25th Annual Police Meet, organised by and for the police, ended well past 10 pm.

But the hundreds of policemen present, including Commissioner A N Roy, didn’t seem to mind the lapse one bit as they watched top Bollywood stars prance about on stage.

In fact, all Roy had to offer afterwards was this excuse: “I agree that the show ended at 10.20 pm. However, as it was only a few minutes late, we continued with it.”

Mr. Roy seems to believe in the dictum that “rules are made to be bent, especially if the bending suits me.”

Yezad, the reason is simple - if the Police is busy watching the actors dancing on stage, it leaves nobody to ‘impose’ the ban.

I think the criticism is in bad taste. Rules & law need to be followed in spirit & not letter. If nobody in the nearby localities is complaining , a few minutes excess should not be cosidered “bending” of law. It was not as if the show went on till midnight or so.

    hi..
came across ur site while searching for the term “mumbai blog meet”.
this whole thing about noise ban is ridiculous..
people who want to put on their speakers put it on anyhow..
recently there was a wedding in the next apartment n the speakers were on till 12 n u wont believe the police chowky is stones throw away from that place.
