Less is more

is always true of government interventions. If we must have the government tax and regulate, let us have the minimum possible. That’s why I am happy to see this piece on flat taxes in the Economist which shows how the idea is not just fine in theory but has worked in practice as well.

And this little bit of news is also heartening.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is set to pare the plethora of regulations that governs the equity market to a manageable few.

Sources familiar with the development said the process of identifying the overlapping regulations was on. A Sebi official told Business Standard, “There should be one single regulation — a master regulation — which should deal with everything under various heads.”

The problem I see with some of these “revenue neutral” proposals to restructure the tax system. (flat tax, national sales tax, whatever.)

Is that they don’t move towards more liberty. Instead they only move sideways. And considering what we know about government, sideways tends in actuality after all the debates, ammendments, and regs to mean towards more tyranny.

Also, it really wouldn’t shrink government that much to simply abolish the income tax and not replace it with anything. I read a stat recently that said it would only reduce government down to about Clinton era levels if it happened. Of course, that could be something of a revolution now, but considering that the vast majority of consirvatives and liberals now, don’t like the expansion of government (except the neo-cons currently in power) it’s really not that impractical of a proposal.

Changing it, also won’t allow people to expose the fraud the IRS has been perpetuating on the American people.

In fact, Larkin Rose, after studying the actual laws and regulations has come to the conclusion that the vast majority of American’s don’t actually own income tax. I was forwarded a message of his recently from his e-mail list here.

    It’s interesting anyway.

We need to crush the IRS and expose it, the DOJ, and the U.S. government for the gustapo opporation that it is. I really don’t see fair-tax as a step in the correct direction.
