Bloggers Milan
Published by Yazad Jal January 12th, 2005 in Web WorldThe cartel is pretty good at sniffing out fellow libertarian bloggers. Our latest find is the “supernova” in the blog world today — Amit Varma. The man actually maintains 3 blogs — India Uncut, The Middle Stage and 23 yards; plus he hopes to start a fourth on cows!
Ravikiran, Gaurav and I met up with Amit and Dilip D’Souza yesterday. Both Amit and Dilip were part of what is possibly the best piece of journalism I’ve seen recently. The blog world is making an impact on “big journalism” in this side of the globe with some superb tsunami reportage. Blog journalism came of age in the US with the recent Presidential elections. I hope it takes off in a big way in India as well.
Back to the meet. Over coffee, and later dinner, followed by more coffee, we discussed a buffet of topics: the tsunami, CRZ and risk perceptions of the poor; anarcho capitalist and minarchist versions of libertarianism; debating (or not) with the Arundhati Roys of the world; cricket (Ravi nearly fell asleep while Amit, Gaurav and I batted through the latest in cricket controversies); our personal journeys on the road to atheism and more. Dilip left early. The rest of us parted the next day (ok ok 12:15 am).
I enjoy these evenings where we’re so engrossed in debate and learning various new things that we forget to order dinner (and also forget our bags in the coffee shop ;-) For me, two things that I will follow up with posts on AnarCapLib are
1) A basic understanding of anarcho capitalist libertarianism and why I think government itself is unnecessary.
2) How did I get to be an atheist.
Update: Here’s Amit’s thoughtful post: The writer, the voice. And yes, we must keep on meeting. How about a Bombay bloggers bash on Sunday, January 30th?
I strongly resent the implication that I am so boring (or so easily bored) that I don’t follow cricket. I am just not qualified to give the kind of detailed statistical analysis that you guys revel in.
hi,
I have been following amit varma’s India Uncut and 23 yards for quite some time now. It is on his blog that i came to know about the blogs of others and you guys meeting — And was i jealous! It must have been a great evening, exchanging ideas and generally talking.
I think , at the moment, except for Dileep, all of the others who were at the meeting blogged about it…and it was wonderful as a reader to get perspectives on the people involved from different “narratives.” I agree with amit when he says that the personality of a writer comes through as s/he writes. In this case it was great to read about the same people from the viewpoint of other writers. Maybe you guys can find some common ground and come up with a group blog. Wish I could be a part of something like that.
Keep up the good writing. The Bombay bloggers bash is a good idea and should be followed up.
Bloggers Milan? Rome mein kab hai? :) couldn’t resist that PJ
Patrix, your geography sucks (worse than the PJ). Milan is a few hundred kilometres north of Rome. Just for that error, we will not invite you to the next meeting which will be held in Milan, Italy ;-)
Hate to be a party pooper, but;
All bloggers are self centered, egotistical, “no-it all” bullshiters.
The internet is nothing more then a lunetic assylem for the unwanted dregs on the human race.
Advice to all; GET A LIFE…..IT’S THERE FOR THOSE WHO WANT IT!
