A laugh riot
Published by MadMan December 2nd, 2004 in Web WorldWhich is funnier? Kiruba’s latest post about some film star being caught naked on tape by a hidden camera? Or the reaction from his conservative Chennai readership that is aghast that Kiruba is not setting a good example for his readers?
There are comments about the “ethics of blogging”. Some people even think college kids are impressionable. I kid you not!
More from Yazad: Two issues struck me the most.
- Privacy. Obviously someone has intruded into the actress’s personal living space and taken pictures without her permission. It does not matter whether she had clothes on or not. I see it as a gross violation of privacy.
- Porn and consenting adults. What’s the big deal about porn? As long as all those (the actors, the viewers, etc) involved are consenting adults, what’s the issue? Consent is important. The actress in Kiruba’s example is not a consenting party to the best of my knowledge.
And the “will corrupt impressionable minds” argument is old hat really. As a teenager, I knew more about weird sex than my parents (I checked with them when I was in my 20’s). I suppose as a parent, I would be in the same boat. And frankly porn bores me now. Get a life, folks!
Update: 215 comments at this time! This must be some kind of record for Kiruba.
MadMan, I agree with you on both points - I thought it was disgraceful someone actually violated the poor woman’s privacy did something this horrofic to her without knowledge.
Secondly, forget college students - I think school children know more about sex than anyone else could imagine. Why is it that in the land of rain-soaked half-naked women dancing suggestively to double entendres people still like to think of their youngsters as some kind of sexual innocents?
“conservative Chennai readership” clears its throat.
First off, where the fuck is Kribs’ post? I can only hear the reactions.
Porn does corrupt impressionable young minds. Like mine. Ooh, I’m so corrupted and it’s all the fault of big bad porn.
Here’s the Google cache of the page
So after all the “I will not take down this page” stuff, Kiruba seems to have capitulated. A shame! But google cache zindabad!
Would you be as amused if someone took such a ‘peephole video’ of your loved ones (gf, spouse, Ma-bahen) and published it on his/her website? Or even better, why don’t you ask them how they would feel?
Quizman, my main problem with the video is not the content, but the issue of consent.
Let me ask you a counter question. Would you feel just as violated if a family member willingly acted in a porn film versus someone taking a peephole video of that family member without permission?
Yazad,
1. If he/she was les than 21 years old, I would take him/her to task, since the duty of an elder is to pass on the wisdom of experience.
2. If he/she was >21 years old, I would still object to his/her choice. Simply because, I don’t live in a moral vacuum and I have been raised with a certain set of values which I cannot get away from. We can talk theoretically about liberating values and all that, but its not a dime’s worth if your decision costs you real money (and happiness). Society has its norms and I don’t think it would be wise to perform an act that would make her/him face scorn from the broader populace. Ergo, it will be to her economic disadvantage to act in such a film. So the moral and the economic argument will make me advise her/him strongly to desist.
Btw, the actors and actresses in such films earn very little.
Btw, my statement was provoked more by the fact that people found perverse jjoy in providing links to what is actually an invasion of privacy. An act that I thought was provocative to liberals.
Quizman, Of course the privacy part is most important. I agree with your first point here. (with age limit 18, not 21)
Moral objections are also fine, as long as there is no physical force being used to stop the person (whether it be male or female). Of course if the person wishes to ignore these objections, as an adult, you have to let them do as they wish, however stupid those wishes might be.
The economic argument is irrelevant.
I would not say that the economic argument is irrelevant. Considering that porn actors have a very short career-span, face health risks and earn little, there is very little economic incentive to act in such films. Additionally, after they exit, they have very little career choice outside of that industry due to social pressures.
