Side order

I love it when an author makes a snarky side comment in a novel. Here’s one from Focault’s Pendulum. (pg 154)

“Historical materialism?” Aglič smiled. “Oh yes, I believe I’ve heard of it. An apocalyptic cult that came out of the Trier region. Am I right?”

i visited karl marx’s house in trier. it is a solid, large imposing house in the city centre, which proves that the marx’s were rich, not ‘working class’. opposite the house where marx was born is the local head office of allianz, the great insurance company. the corner houses a supermarket. trier is a lovely town in WEST germany that has survived successfulloy because of capitalism. of course, they remember mr marx. and the street upon which the house in which he was born stands is called KARL MARX STRASSE!

Foucault’s Pendulum is complex man…I ended up more confused than before with unheard of names, unheard of events and the French that comes in the middle…..a good book though….
