Still a newbie
Published by Yazad Jal October 5th, 2004 in About MeMore than a year after I’ve started using MT, I’m still a newbie and even the most minor of template changes flummox me. Just today, I wanted to change the “recent comments” on the sidebar — display the entry name instead of just “entry” and open the link in a new page. I did the first and got stuck on the second. What I thought was a simple use of “target=_blank” turned out to be a mini nightmare as the MT tags merrily refused to close!
Luckily birthday boy Sameer was on yahoo messenger and he solved the problem in a matter of minutes. Thanks Supersam!
One more example of how my techie friends spoil me. All I have to do is ask online and hey presto my problems are solved. If only other aspects of life were so simple!
But why do you want to open links in a new page? I hate it when links open in a new page. I invariably drag the link to the address bar to make sure that they open on the same page and my wrists ache from the effort.
External links I can understand, though I still don’t like it. At least within the blog links should open on the same page.
Ravi, Because I like it. Ideally I’d want to give readers a choice. Keep either option as the default and then allow readers to toggle. All it requires is some kind techie to write the code ;-)
Till then, my likes rule.
If you want readers to have a choice then open it by default in the same window. They can always right-click to open in a new window. If you open it by default in a new window, I can’t open it in the same window without greatly increasing my risk of getting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
