From the OED, meaning of goodness :
====
Moral excellence as displayed in one’s relations to others. a. As an attribute of the Deity ({dag}said also of Christ and the Virgin Mary): Infinite benevolence, a desire for the happiness of all created beings; also the manifestation of this; beneficence.
====
In various exclamatory phrases, in which the original reference was to the goodness of God (cf. sense see above), as goodness gracious!, goodness (only) knows!, {dag}for goodness!, for goodness’ sake!, in the name of goodness!, (I wish) to goodness!, surely to goodness!, thank goodness!, etc., or simply goodness!
In my book, TGIF stands for the “The Grub is Fucked”
Except goodness has an OED etymology which informs us, that not coincidentally, it referred to the qualities of Christ and the Virgin Mary. :-)
Looks like qualities related to virtuosity have largely arisen from religion, including Greco-Roman ones. :-)
