Reliance in retail
Published by Yazad Jal July 30th, 2004 in EconomicsInteresting piece of news: Reliance plans to do a Wal-Mart in India.
Considering that the cartel had an small debate on the issue barely a month back, I’d love to continue it in the light of the “Reliance in retail” angle.
My take is that the retail market is ripe, not just at the high end, but also at the low end, and the big gains will be in smaller towns. The main block that Reliance may face is not logistics but their credibility, given their perceived lack of ethics.
nd the big gains will be in smaller towns .. i remember the earlier discussion you refer to .. and Gaurav had brought out a nice point there .. saying that just the awe traditionally associated with these supermarkets keeps the rural/middle class guy (or rather housewife .. in that context) out of them. Reliance will have to win a lot of hearts with well positioned advertising (and ofcourse products on offer) to really do well in rural as well as urban areas.
Lakc of Ethics (not just a perception but reality in case of Reliance) is a serious issue for sensitive people who felt cheated and bitter w.r.t. reliance mobile phones. However, in this country these thigs don’t matter (as people are grossly insensitive. that’s our culture) and unethical people will be rewarded with big business. Reliance even set an example for this country by raping ethical people and patting backs of defaulters who did not pay the bills.
Its quite a tragedy that north-indians aren’t familiar with the south retail scene.
Subhiksha in TN and margin-free in kerala are doing very well. And having learnt very early about the “awe factor”, they use very simple, clean, non-AC layouts to attract everyone , and they do.
Subhiksha has developed eough market power to sit on the advisory board for HLL consumer products.
Hey Prakash, maybe you can help us close that gap in our knowledge. Would you like to write a guest post on AnarCapLib? Drop me a line on mail[at]yazadjal[dot]com
An aside: Gaurav, Gautam and I, the three main debaters on the previous post on retail industry in India, are all from West India. Bombay and Pune can only be categorised as “North” by the geographically challenged ;-)
The reason why Wal Mart is hit is because of the way Suburban America works - every body owns a car and they can afford to run small shops close by out of buisness to make the grandeur of Wal Mart economically viable.
But that is not the case in India - and so our small grocers will continue to thwart Reliance.
Nilu, I’d look at the cost of transport (home to mall and back) and compare it with the savings made while shoppping at the mall. If cost is less than savings, we’d see a “retail boom,” regardless of the number of cars. You could choose to take a bus / cab, etc.
Also, I’ve noticed a higher penetration of cars / bikes in small twon India compared to the big cities, largely because small towns have poor public transport. (This is anecdotal, would love to see some research on it)
Grocery purchase will probably always be done live at the shop. I like to see what I’m going to be cooking and eating.
For FMCG products, anyone who can deliver promptly on being given a list, will do well. My local shop does that and it’s very convenient.
That leaves Durables where larger malls can make their sales.
Walmart’s policy is low prices all year round. In India the large mall’s main attraction are the “Sale!”.
Reliance can certainly extract the lowest prices from their suppliers to sell at the lowest cost. They did it in the mobile business where they’re supposed to have gotten Samsung/LG to give them the phone for some ridiculously low cost rumoured to be anywhere between 500 to 2000 bucks.
Uptil now Reliance has been creating wealth for a host of people along the way, franchisees, small shopkeepers, agents, etc. Now if the strategy is to directly compete with these people and put them out of business that won’t be looked upon fondly by the either the left or right parties. But then Reliance has a reputation for steamrolling over opposition.
Yazad,
If Reliance is really able to pull off a Wal-Mart type of operation in India, the consumer will be a clear winner.
But as the experience of hypermarkets (like Carrefour) entering Thailand has shown, the mom-and-pop grocery stores will almost certainly lose out. The Leftists in the current government are sure to side with the protests from these quarters rather than support the consumer’s cause.
Not just the leftists, a large part of BJP vote is small traders.
It’s a common misconception that Wal Mart pushes out mom and pop stores. It doesn’t. Consumers do, by preferring Wal Mart to smaller stores. There is an essential difference. Wal Mart cannot prevent you or me from buying from other stores (like for example a government regulation can).
Chandrashekar, I have found grocery shopping easier in large malls. All the fruits / veggies are there (some of them pre-cut), and everything I require like masalas, grain etc. Also, it’s easier to browse and select brands in a supermarket compared to a grocer (bania) who might give you very little choice.
Once margins are lower, the “sale season” will be a thing of the past. Go to Big Bazaar — every time I’ve been there something or the other is marked down for a sale.
Yes, I agree, both BJP and CPM (and Congress!) are going to be pressurised by the small traders lobby. Something that needs to be fought I suppose.
Mises.org has a lot of articles on Wal Mart. Here’s a google search on them.
You tend to buy groceries everyday or every other day since you want fresh ones and sometimes you just want some onion or coriander or chilli so it’s more convenient to pop down and buy a couple of things rather then drive or cab it up to a big mall. Yeah choice is more in a bigger mall.
Something or the other marked down is exactly what I mean by sale, the Walmart way is all prices marked down all the time.
Margin lowering won’t happen until someone comes in and disrupts the old order like Reliance did to the cell market. Even here I think they will mark down some of the items some of the time in order to not piss off everybody.
Taking up the point of big retailers pushing out the mom and pop stores.
We had this talk by TESCO’s India head at IIMB the other day. According to him, when Tesco set up in North Thailand, it bombed miserably. Later on, they asked the local veggie-stalls to set up outside Tesco. What then happened was that the local population would come to Tesco, buy their groceries at the stalls, and then come into Tesco and buy their FMCGs. Tesco and the small grocers were actually in a symbiotic relationship instead of competing with each other.
Yazad,
Your analogy of cost comparisons between transport and ammt saved will work well in western societies…
But in India when majority of the population has money only to afford the next few meals - they would still not make an investment that would yield savings in the longer run. However my anecdotal research does make a lot of assumptions ;)
Nilu, I doubt if the retailers are looking at ALL Indians as their target group. I think thy’d be happy with around one third.
That’s approximately 340 million — the population of Europe and 90 million more than the population of USA.
Chnadrashekhar, I doubt if large retail chains will finish off small grocers who supply day to day stuff like what you mention or say bread. Aadisht’s example shows shows symbiosis also works in the field.
Regarding sales, what I meant was that we’d no longer have 11 months of “regular” prices and 1 month of “sale” — something or the other would be on sale everytime. Wal Mart does that as you rightly mention. So do the Indian retail chains that I’ve seen — Big Bazaar and Foodland.
Yazad,
Most of those one third whom you are talking about already live in the cities in India.
And Wal Mart is not a huge hit in the cities - for obvious reasons.
These supermarkets work well for semi urban/semi rural areas, and I think that in itself provides a huge logistical problem!
Yazad. Communication gap. We’re saying the same thing :)
In latest news in today’s TOI related to this post,
1.) 60 malls opening in Gurgaon.
2.) Major business houses like Wadia, Godrej, etc getting into the retail business.
(In the business section)
The problem with large malls is that they cannot usually be located in the heart of big cities due to real estate prices. I live in Seattle and the closest Wal-Mart as about 10 miles away in the suburbs. I would not drive 10 miles just pick up a packet of soap and a tooth paste. I’d just prefer to stroll down the road and pick up some toothpaste at the local store even if it is $1 more than Wal-Mart - just for the sheer convenience and the fact that I don’t feel like fighting freeway traffic just for a tube of toothpaste.
I think the super stores will be a logistical problem in India because of the following reasons:
1] People will only go to the super store to stock up on supplies.
2] They only work in America because everybody has cars. You cannot stock up on a months worth of groveries and take public transport - you just would not be able to carry it all.
3]Indian’s have got a fetish for ‘fresh’ food.
I don’t care about the mom and pop stores from an economic point of view - they should compete or go out of business but from a logistical point of view and knowing the infrastructure problems and the attitudes of people in India, I doubt it will be a success
OK, about Reliance.
I do not agree with the premise that there is an ethical image problem. Only very few people who know the business world very well know about Reliance’s ethical adventures. By and large, Indians love Reliance. Look at the number of people who have invested in reliance stock. Look at the number of subscribers Reliance Mobile has.
And this “Reliance Subscribers feel cheated and bitter” thing…..this mail that was being circulated about how Reliance is more expensive that GSMs….it is all propoganda. I have been using Reliance for over 7 months, and it positively has the best connection, best call rates, minimum call drops, best network availablility…
Agreed. Also great mobile internet speeds if you’re using a laptop.
Now if only they could introduce some good phone models at cheaper rates…
Is the discussion over?
Is the discussion over?
Ankur, you can always restart it!
By planning commission figures urban population shall overtake rural population figrues as early as 2015 , taking into a/c current migration rates . So i figure malls would be a good proposal. Moreover, a certain customer care idiom would be thrown in by virtue of which we can return stuff to the mall and lower prices would certainly benefit the customer . As for transport to and from mall, it would be affordable for a co like Reliance to give free transport shuttle from city centre or major Transport hubs, as is done even by huge malls in US. case in point is Potomac Mills in Virginia and several other mega malls
That was a very healthy debate…u hardly come across such debates on line….
All above discussions can be summarised as:
1. Realiance needs to win hearts and create a trustworthy name.
2. It can do Wal-Mart in India because of sheer volumes it can buy and hence the price benefit.
3. It cannot do Wal mart because our rural population does not have Cars to offset price of shopping vs expenditure and because Indian mkt is such that the housewife wants to see/feel prodct that’s being bought.
4. People esp small traders will be not supportive as they will go out of business.
5. And Wal Mart is not a huge hit in the cities - for obvious reasons.
These supermarkets work well for semi urban/semi rural areas, and I think that in itself provides a huge logistical problem!
My understanding is as follows:
1. First question is is Reliance coming in Retail Mall or Super mkt.
The theries and economics will be different for both.
2. Reliance is a big brand. A known name. It has taken mobile right in the hands of rickshaw puller.
Of course it needs to do a lot in brand building for a Retail Mall/Super mkt as the goods sold in mall may not be essential commodities and in super mkt, the eatables will always be bought with caution.
3. Demographics and lifestyle in India is changing to fast paced career oriented families. This calls for one stop shop for weekly/monthly requirements.
4. If it comes in shopping malls, then the important aspect is low cost products or Lifestyle products.
In case low cost products then its all about economies of scale.
Customer will be pulled if cost is low, variet is large, location approachable and service/after sales service is well defined.
If life style products, then it has to be building glamour and dreams around its concept and preferable get every big national / international brand under it’s roof. The location may not be important as a total experience can be created and people will flock from far and wide. Chk out Victoria bldg mall in Sydney.
If it’s super market, then again, the aspect important is variety, location, range, and guarantees.
5. Last but not the lease, the differentiating factor:
I still do not find what’s different in Ansal Plaza, and Gurgaon Malls or Noida malls….It’s same set of shops-Benetton, Adidas etc and same fast foof chains like Barista, Mc Donalds etc. Need a lot of innovativeness in this regard.
It’s actually high time that Indians get their fair share of all 3 categories stated above.
And to create either of these, one needs big group, willingness to do this in innovative way and nurture talent-one of the very important aspect of Retail, which is missing till date.
Dear All
India is progessing fast enough to go for big Retails . It is the manmangement which is going to be the key to success in INDIAN RETAIL PLATFORM.
You can do anything in terms of lowing down the cost and provide best of teh services , but final delivery process involve human aspact, so an environment which is there in a lala company won’t work in retail.
Any other logic?
Manish Rohtagi

Reliance and othe retail chains have enough room to make a profit and expand. Indian economy growing at 8%.
Price organised retailsers get is around 7% less than other retail stores.
carrying all you buy is a problem for indians, but with the middle class slowly getting cars, I think the organised retail boom is here to stay.
There are questions which can be raised over the ethical functioning of Reliance.
Wow !!! Am soo glad I found this forum just did a google ” Reliance retail ” and you guys showed up…Nice.
A couple of comments on some earlier postings :
1. Realiance cannot grow in rural markets : Disagree on this note. Assuming that infrastructure and man management issues are taken care of , the sheer cost of land in these rural markets make it possible for large companies to set large super stores in these markets unlike metro cities. Wal-mart has found this in China and believe it or not are setting up huge super stores on the main roads of smaller cities in mainland china , Ref :Wall Street Journal, shall get the date if anyone is interested ( Cant wait to see this myself when i visit china in May)
2. Wal-mart and groceries: Aadisht made an intresting reference to the TESCO head’s talk of thier problems with groceries. Currently, in the US both Wal-mart and Target are trying every act possible to increase thier grocery business. Wal-mart has been acussed, yup yet another one!!!!, of cross subsidizing grocery prices with that of other higher margin products.
3. Credit system in smaller towns : It would be intresting to see how comapnies target the large base of smaller town customers who thrive on small purchases and use credit facilities offered by the kirana wallaha’s. How would they tackle the disposable income issue esp. for people who survive on weekly wages and those that earn just enough to meet thier needs?
I am not sure if all of you have been reading lately about Wal-mart’s new plans of ramping up the look of the stores, following Target’s strategy of getting designer wear clothes at affordable prices and targeting the middle income and upper middle income customers. They are also starting to align certain stores to not having cheap products. This is an interesting one to watch out and see how they do this.
FYI : NRF smart brief : this is an intresting retail newsletter to subcribe to , though focusses more on the US. Anyone who would know of similar ones in SCM and backend systems ?
Hopefully more debates , talks would start out. Would love to use the spare time I get in my Ethics and Law classes !!!!!!! I hate Enron even more for this, where we poor B school students have to sit for 2-3 hr sessions of these …..
This was a great site to get some insight from people out there on Reliance retail specifically and reliance generally.
Having read through the “bricbats”, it would be interesting to hear what everyone has to say about the image of the brand as such with the recent IPO getting oversubscribed 47 times - as per the latest?
Okay guys i found this blog really interestin. Ive been workin for a huge Multinational and my main job is dealing with such Super/Hyper Markets. From my experience what i can say is these Hyper Malls are eventually gonna make life difficult for all the small stores wer we used to go to get our daily dose of lollipop candies wen we were kids. nowadays even kids prefer to buy their pack of candies from such huge stores. And one shud also remember that such big malls offer the customer a unique experience when they shop, regardless of his status, what with even people with not so great purchasing power throngin the stores. Everybody wants to be seen and want to experience the feeling of shoppin at such a huge place. Infact people have already started to associate it with status. And the discounts that these super stores offer can only be termed as the cherry on top of the cake. Cnsidering Rlaince’foray into the retail venture is a very sound move what with the company having Rs.13000 crores of surplus every year and investments in a booming sector like Retail was only natural for Relaince wich is spreadin its wings in all the directions covering as many businesses as possible. Also the massive recruitment drive undertaken by Relaince has given enuff reasons for all the existing Retail giants to have cold feet what with people looking the Reliance way jus becoz of the compensation it is offering. Finally from what i can see is Reliance has carefully drafted its move to enter this business which has the potential to grow by leaps and bounds!
respected sir,

Guys,
I just popped into the conversation as I was seeing the web site. Actually I have joined Reliance Retail!
Well I feel that in this generation of ours, earning money is slowly chnging from necessity to luxury. Hence we find so many foreign cafes, brands etc. doing so well here.
Also a comfort of spending the evening wlking in airconditioned space is something the generation loves.
The factor is not to attract the people but to retain them and ensure that ehy come again and again. What say?
Good Debate!
I am into food processing and marketing business for last 4 years. I want to share my experience of dealing with small retails in neighourhoods and supermarkets.
When I started marketing products and tried to establish distribution in small retails (kiran shops). It is so difficult! Why in cities like Mumbai, pune all these retailers formed association and they don’t keep products if you don’t have permission from association. Getting permission from association is very costly for new small businesses. One time big donation, keeping products with retailers first time for 50% margin and no guaranty of sale or payment. This nothing but killing entrpreneurship! Now these same people are crying that Supermarkets are killing their business.
Thus story is simolar to what happen earlier with other consumer goods and auto sector. Monopoly in scooters made Bajaj arrogant. In 80’s you have pay deposit for getting scooter and wait for 5 years to get scooter. Car models offered by PAL, HM were just medicore. look what happened today. You are offered money(loan) to buy cars with very good chooices. same thing is happening with retail.
Suppermarket was very good experience for me. Very good terms, prompt payment.
Also Supemarket provides a shopping experience, which is very soothing. You can go through several products, choices before you buy any product. You are offered variety of products in one place. thats great!
Small retailers will have to work out to remain copetitive. They have certian advantages, like credit offered by them to neighorhood people, easy access.
Lets hope at the end consumer gets best deal for his hard earned money!

Hi Guys,
Reliance Retail - Its making great news these days right from the phenomenal speed at which it is hiring to the obvious size with which it plans to launch.
Well, Walmart’s a success is based on the cost competency that it created through the so called Organized Retailing. The question that comes to my mind is what shape will this organized retailing take in India looking at our peculiarities.

hi friends,
I am selected as a trainee field officer for reliance retail from MPKV,Rahuri ,Maharashtra, agriculture university campus. I hope this brainchild of mr.Mukesh Ambani will mark excellance in retailing in rural areas. I have got the opportunity to excel with reliance propelance.thank u.
Dear All,
It is great to see this discussion on Reliance Retail.
Organised Retailing in India is shaping up and Entry of
Reliance into this forey will give it the required momentum, with the money and plans they have.
Who says we require FDI in retail? we have good players inhouse who can drive to organising the same.
The only problem Reliance can face is actually skilled Manpower to actually get this to success. Once the first two ranks of professionls are filled in from the places where there is organised Retail, Reliance will have to turn to the local talent pool available. But strangly is there a local pool?
Secondly I feel there are many cases where one have doubts that wheather the recruitment drive presently undertaken by Reliance is under some devised plan. Or is it hire everyone and anyone probably you can fire afterwards??
There will be huge demotivations for professionals who will join but will not know where they are placed in the hirarchy.? or is there a succession plan? He/she should have negotiated better!! How much time it will take for him/her to reach there?
Now beleieve me a satisfied leader (however good he is ) can not lead a dissatisfied demotivated work force to make the organisation successful.
I hope any one has a different opinion or experience or info please fill me in as Mr. Mukesh Ambani may not be a part of our discussion to make a official statment
Thanks
Vini
well well!! now what do we have here. toothpaste costing 40 bucks sold for 20… or even less. any thing is possible, with reliance. as much as you hate the company for its infocomm goof ups, you really have to admire them for their business acumen. when they get into a new business, they change the rules. we expect reliance retail to do the same. I feel the single biggest advantage that reliance retail has over the nearest competitors, is the conceptualisation of business strategy. They seem to have every loose end securely tied up, even before the first brick is laid. The strategy is backed up by an endless supply of funds(which are used quite surreptitiously sometimes!!). I can’t help but feel that the retail war that we are going to witness in the coming months, is going to be a short one.

hey guys…
has anyone got a clue how to get on board of reliance’s team as a merchandiser. i am a fresh grad from NIFT …
Some of my seniors have gotten thru but dunno if reliance will even consider fresh grads like me. i have a dergree in Apparel merchandising and Marketing…
Please Help!!
All those Reliance aspirants need to wait and watch especially those in agribusiness. Agribuines calls for experianced hands which this country lacks seriously because of unorganized agricultural trade. Many of the corporates who have entered earlier in this trade are yet to make a mark. Just bringing in the money and scale of operation will not asure success. Every agricultural commodity has its own characteristic behaviour which needs to be studied carefully. They need experianced persons to do this as well. I wonder how fresh recruits will be able to do it.

let me know abt complite add. of relaince retail .
hey guys;
the wait is last over ,yesterday reliance gave the blueprint of how they want to enter the indian consumer market ,
i am a innovation consultant and will share some fine points of reliance competattive strategy ;
1 go single
2 go global
3 kill competition by volumes
4 be fetish about gross turnovers and keep it at bay at all times
5 reflect modestly but be focussed and centric on cumulative disadvantages of business doing
6 deliver at the doorstep to proactive create a feel good impact while the makeover be lasting effect
7 on one hand make govt announce a single brand strategy for foreign players but on the other hand make new grounds of acquiring different product ,different brands and make base firm for the outside player to have difficult propositions to enter ,hense to be part of the growth story he will subside to be a supplier to reliance retail then be a retailer himself
8 bring fdi not now ,later ,as of now buyout the million dollar babys of retail sector with internal accururals and create the showface
9 create a notional feeling so that brands like pantaloon , big bazaar ,subhiksa fall prey .
10 the only local competition is from itc and tata westside ,all other brands shall go overnight into reliance wallet
11 what happens to kmart shall happen to lot of businesses in india under reliance retails
guys watch out for within next 5 years ,money power and reliance shall be what you will inhale and exhale

Its Great news that Reliance retail is there to come shortly great for job seeker also.

There will be a great oppurtunity for the future.
Gopal
The main problem with behemoths like Reliance is - Profiteering & not just Profit. The basic underlying intention is ‘dishonest’. There are scores of guneapigs willing to profiteer out of a legal swindle that companies like Reliance perpetuate on gullible people. Unfortunately the tribe of these cheats is much bigger than the gullible and is growing by leaps & bounds. The simple logic is - so long as I am taking out my profit, so what if the company cheats legally ?
Has anybody bothered to study the graph of Reliance public issues ? Reliance Polypropylene & Reliance Polyethylene - converted at a premium to Reliance Industries. Same repeat for Reliance Petrochemicals after a gap of 6 years. Once again yet again a Reliance Petro has just concluded at record-breaking response of willing gunea pigs lining up to get butchered happily. Wait for this also to be converted back to Reliance Industries yet again. And now the same repeat in 2 Avtars - both the the brothers are going to compete with each other, as to who gathers a bigger pie out of us gullible Indians - poor individually, but very rich collectively for these giants to milk.
Does anyone dare protest ???
