Jobs or opportunities?

On the drive from Sofia to Jundola, we saw women in the fields cutting hay with large scythes, just as I suspect it was done there 100 years ago � just as I suspect it was done there 200 years ago.
But, hey, it�s a job.
People talk of �jobs� as if these are ends in themselves � as if jobs are goods, rather than bads. But jobs are bads � or, more precisely, they�re costs. A job is the necessary effort each of us must put forward in order to acquire purchasing power. (snip)
Jobs are ubiquitous; there�s no shortage of them. One job that I often offer to people is the job of painting my house for free. Of course, no one will accept this job. The reason is that people don�t want the job so much as they want to acquire purchasing power.
Therefore, �creating jobs� is not the real challenge. Jobs are everywhere. The real challenge is creating widespread opportunities for earning large and growing purchasing power. (Emphasis mine)
In India we have to first cross the “employment guarantee scheme” mentality. But a little opening of eyes shows that even the poor do create their own opportunities, by leaving their villages to live in big city slums. Clearly, cities provide better livelihood opportunities than any employment guarantee scheme of the government.
I think you are confusing job with labor (noun). Labor is one of the factors of production. So your argument that a job by itself has no value is correct just as a dollar bill without any value associated with it is worthless. However both a job and a a dollar bill are representative of labor and capital respectively both of which are essential to production.

correct but that is only one side of the issue - a job is not only the effort to aquire purchasing power but also the function performed by labor. YOu are mixing factors of production with the function of teh factor which leads to this illogical conclusion.

the point which bastiat made and which is repeated in the cafe hayek post, is that it is not the EFFORT (the JOB) that we value, but the RESULT - the purchasing power it gives us.

No the donkey wouldn’t have hooves of gold but you can bet your ass (pun intended)that the owner would be wearing a very nice gold chain as a result of the donkey’s labor. So I think you are wrong that labor does not produce wealth - of course it does - there is just no guarantee that the wealth will accrue to the labourer.
I think Sauvik has misquoted Bastiat. He does not say that progress is the result of effort but “To progress is to increase the ratio of effort to result.” The key word here being the ratio between effort and result - not result by itself.
Modern production and wages are not always centered around a result. A worker in a factory is paid wages for his effort. It is not always possible to calculate each workers contribution to the result (product) which is why modern companies pay workers by the hour ($/hour of effort) as opposed to what the final result of the effort was. This of course leads to the problem that hourly workers are in no hurry to finish their work quickly as they get paid $x/hour so it is in fact not in their best interest to do the work more efficiently but to make full use of the alloted time (there are sometime incentives for finishing a job early but it is an exception rather than the rule).
I always thought ‘creating jobs that will generate some wealth (or purchasing power if u must) for the worker’ is the implicit meaning of ‘creating jobs’.
As good as cafe hayek may be .. if someone comes to you and says ‘would you have some work for me’ and you tell him - yes go paint my house - (for free) .. then well .. its just being oversmart isnt it?
Okay this is seeming more and more oversmart (or idiotic .. take it any way you prefer) to me .. Jobs are ubiquitous; theres no shortage of them. .. this is like if someone says there is an energy crisis’ or there is a shortage of water then you challenge that guy saying ‘there is ample energy and ample water .. the shortage is in the energy and water you can make use of’ .. it is perfectly valid and correct .. exceot the fault lies in that that was obvious.
Idiotic would suit better. Have no idea abt this Cafe Hayek guy, but he should jolly well be someone very gudd, for we are attaching this much importance to a writing that won’t even even attract economics students after their first day in class.

It isn’t the job per se that we’re interested in. It’s what the job gives us (wages) that we’re interested in. Extrapolate wages to income, and then the job doesn’t matter at all.
Let’s make Boudreaux’s joke of a free house painting job more realistic. Suppose he were to pay — at the mimumum wage rate — how many of you 3 might take it? And do that permamnently? I.e. paint houses for a living? I am currently looking for a peon for my office. I’d pay 10-15% above the market rate for peons in Bombay. How mnay of you would apply for the job? Hey — it’s a real job!
Ck, this is true of every factor of production, not just labour. We’re more interested in the rent or the yield of the land than the land itself; more interested in the rate of interest capital earns than the principal amount of capital itself; more interested in the profits from entrepreneurship than just being an entrepreneur.

I agree with anya to a great extent. When people talk of employment guarantee schemes, it is the wages that are being guaranteed, i.e the purchasing power. Remember Keynes and his idea of paying people to dig and fill up holes?
The thing is, in India there is a lot of scope for “efforts-in-exchange-for-purchasing-power” even in rural areas, but the state puts a lot of obstacles in the path of this exchange. Employment guarantee scheme just seems like a lesser evil.
To clarify a bit more. Suppose we assume that socialism is here to stay. Now given that assumption, it is better that the government actually gets the work done and pays people through the guarantee scheme, rather than the money just going into the hands of babus.
Not the best way to progress, but definitely the lesser evil.
However I agree with Bordeaux about the misplaced focus on creating jobs. It illustrates why Gandhiji’s ideas of economics were totally screwed up and regressive.
Let me repeat Boudreaux with a slightly different emphasis.
Yes, even the government tries to give jobs with the intent of creating purchasing power. But intent is not enough. The resulting purchasing power is small and limited. If they get it at all, that is — read more: Dahanu tribe faces starvation deaths

You forget one very important thing that the job gives us - a product. You are looking at it solely from the point of view of the worker - the job is not just something that a worker does to get wages, the result of the job also produces a product or a service which is consumed by others. SO when somebody does a job he generates two things - a good or service as well as wages. IN some cases the wage will match his contribution to the good or service (this hardly ever happens - look at Nike shoes) and in the case of slavery he gets no wages for the job he performs - however just becuae he is not paid does not mean that he is not doing anything - he is still generating a product.
I agree that labor itself is a consumption (of energy) and thus a disutility. Labor acts on its input to transform them into something more valuable by mixing with them its ‘mental’ and ‘physical’ energy. Whether labor generates wealth or not depends on:
1) Luck — Because of uncertainity of future, what labor has “produced” (transformation of inputs) may not be ultimately valuable. Good example, is burnt food.
2) Application of consciousness towards the goal — Food might get burnt during cooking if one is not careful to continuously monitor it. This is function of will power. Ultimately, only thing that a “human” labor can really contribute is application of will towards a certain goal.

Ck, just extending Boudreax point. It holds even if the wages for a certain job are non-zero (or above market rate). You still woudn’t take that job and prefer to stay unemployed till you get something that you want.
I am looking from a specific perspective, yes. And not all jobs give us a “product” — digging ditches and filling them up — what’s the product? Keynsian kartwheels? ;-)
