Attacked by Comment Spam

AnarCapLib was hit by 80+ spam comments in the last few hours. I’ve just managaed to delete them all (and ban the IP). I think I’d have to do more than just periodically delete these spam comments.

Most of the spam hits old posts. I am going to close comments on posts that are more than two weeks old unless a debate is still going on there. Apart from that, I am also going to add some blocking software, which I hope will work. Any advice or help is welcome as I’m the proverbial internet newbie fiddling around with MT!

I’ve heard that upgrading to MT 1.66 helps.
MT blacklist by Jay Allen is something we could consider.
Then there is something that uses the captcha technology. It shows you an image giving a number and you have to type out that number into a box.

captcha technology—-a little too much for the current purpose of simply writing comments!

Better still move to wordpress.org and employ compulsory sign in for writng comments(cookie based). But you need to have a dedicated set of users for it.

It’s database driven, hence there is no rebuild time and pretty fast

I realise I should have written 2.66 instead of 1.66.
And Yazad, I racked my brain long and hard, but couldn’t figure out which proverb refers to an internet newbie fiddling with MT.

    Meanings of the word proverbial.

    1. Of the nature of a proverb. 2. Expressed in a proverb. 3. Widely referred to, as if the subject of a proverb; famous.

Note meaning #3. “newbie” is a rather widely referred to term and could very well be considered to be the subject of a proverb. If none exists, then we have the opportunity to invent it!

MT Blacklist by Jay Allen is what I use. It has a feature that looks back at all your old posts for banned IP addresses/URL’s…so you can clean your spam comments with just a couple of clicks. And btw, I’ve been getting like 10-15 spam comments *everyday* for a couple of months now :-)

Another stupid, unnecessary, almost idiotic comment, but I sometimes wish I had comment spam. Except one or two, there have been nothing at all.
From what I know, comment spmmers go only to regularly visted blogs, and popular blogs.
Jivha and you might be the next Truth Laid Bear.
Hmm, elusive popularity. (Hope this doesnt get deleted and my IP banned)

Yazad, I use MT-Blacklist too. It is great really and has cut down enormously on the time and effort I spent deleting spam comments from my blog. Check it out.
