Alter Ego is back in action.
Somehow the blogroll does not show *new* when certain blogs are updated. Will my techie friends please enlighten me?

It’ll show new only if those blogs ping weblogs.com. Most blogspot blogs don’t. Dunno about livejournal blogs.
Neither does your blog say *new* on mine. Hence I haven’t come here.
I think the problem is also the way your ping link is versus the link by which others are linking to you. For example, if you ping weblogs.com as “http://yazadjal.com” and I have you linked as “”http://yazadjal.com/index.html” or somesuch, then I won’t see the updates on your blog, because the link that I am looking at, is different from the link you are sending out.
Hope that made sense :)
The onus of pinging weblogs.com or blo.gs is on the weblog owner. If he/she does not ping these sites then you won’t have *new* next to their blogs on your blogroll even when they’ve updated their blogs.
You can configure automatic pinging of weblogs.com and blo.gs through MT for instance. But the free account holders at BlogSpot don’t have automatic pinging of weblogs.com enabled. It is, however, present on the pro version. Livejournal, again, does not have the facility for automatic pinging.
Isn’t this somewhat similar to trackback?
In trackback you ping to a specific post. While pinging to weblogs u ping generally for anyone to pick up.
That’s the difference.
This is how it works - blogrolling picks up data from weblogs.com and blo.gs about which blogs have been updated. You should let these websites know when you update your blog. If you use MT, it’s configured to ping weblogs.com and blo.gs by default. If you don’t, both have a small form you can fill out. Most people don’t do this, so their blogs don’t show up as updated in the blogroll.
In trackback, you send a ping to a trackback enabled blog about a particular entry or category or author. That way, the blog author knows that you have referenced a particular post or category, and the url at which you have done so.
Thanks folks.
